OCD treatments

When trying to find the right OCD treatment centers, there are two major points you should be looking at. The first point I would say is, are they known for specializing in your type of OCD. For example, what king a fears, contamination, checking etc. Different facilities around the world are known for treating certain types of OCD. The second point, are they really dedicated to your recovery or are they just trying to run a business and make cash. I have seen lots of OCD so called “boot camps” and they are nothing more than wanting to push as many people through. I understand they have to make money, but your health and recovery should be number one.

I actually had time to watch the show “Obsessed” and have to say I feel for everyone on that show. This disorder can take up so much of your time and can be really tiring. The doctors on the show all use the exposure technique and as you can see it really works. Great show, I will be watching.

Is there any one time during the year where your OCD symptoms really act up. I notice my symptoms getting worse around the winter time. This might have something to do with the busy holiday season and our cold cold winters. Sitting around thinking of things to worry about is not a good idea. I try to stay busy during these tough times. Try to take up a hobby or a sport. They main key here is to keep active and your mind strong.

There is not one known way (OCD) Obsessive compulsive disorder is caused. Doctors have said it could be genetics or at early childhood exposure to dramatic situations. I can remember when I started to see my symptoms. It was a basic panic attack at school. I remember my heart pounding, breathing fast and feeling like I was starting to go crazy. OCD is just one of many anxiety disorders out there. I have been in therapy for years and with a lot of searching I can narrow it down to two events in my life. Besides being born with this disorder, it all depends what or if any certain events will flip the switch on. I remember watching  TV about germs and how it can destroy your body. I was told to wash my hands all the time. This has been stuck into my head for years. I didn’t want to be contaminated with whatever was out there. I was washing my hands 250 times per day. Washing and rewashing my clothes, dishes and door handles. This was not a life to live. The second event I can remember was the big scare about blood born illnesses. I would put 5 bandaids over a scratch to make sure nobody’s blood would land on my scratch. Sounds crazy I know, but if you suffer from this disorder, you know exactly what I am talking about.

I have been better now and would concider myself  “OCD free”. This took a lot of time, tool and coaching to beat this. There is hope. I am walking proof of it.

There are so many different ways to treat OCD. It all depends on what type of symptoms you have and how severe. I have been in therapy for over 9 yeaars now and found that the best line of defense for my symptoms is exposure therapy. Exposure therapy is one of  the best ways to attack your fears, get your anxiety up. The main goal in this is to stay in the situation as long as you can. Rate your anxiety level out of 10, 10 being the worst. The main goal is to be put in the situation that makes you feel anxious, and to stay exposed to it until your anxiety level drops to a 3.

Take baby steps when your trying this approach. At first, maybe leave the situation at a level 7, take some time to relax and then try exposure again. This will not all happen in one day, but eventually you will be exposed so much that you will not feel as anxious when you first started. The main goal is to get your anxiety level down to a 1.

This therapy is so difficult, trust me, but it works. I will always apply this method to my everyday life when tackling something that I am not sure of. It has made me a better person, friend, work and family man.
